Even Rabbits Have Drama
My Fine Arts writing moved on to Nationals! I went back and forth so much on my topic this year and didn't think that this one was my best work, but it surprised me by going on! I wrote this short story in January, so I'm very excited to finally be able to share it. I hope you enjoy "Even Rabbits Have Drama!"
Saturday
morning dawned, clear and cold. Serawyn hopped out her hutch door and
stopped to twitch her velvety gray ears in anticipation of all that Jesus might
have in store for her that day. All rabbits, being superior musicians, devote
their Saturdays to a community practice session, and Serawyn was no different.
"Serawyn!"
A khaki-colored doe tumbled down the hill. "Wait up!"
"Oh
my gosh, Lilith, you're so loud." A fluffy doe with silky, dark fur, Lyra sauntered
down behind her.
"Hi, Lilith! Hi, Lyra!" Serawyn grinned brightly.
"Girl,
your fur." Lyra pawed a few of the offensive strands. "You know silver is so
not in."
"Ya."
Lilith attempted to imitate Lyra's superior expression.
"I
like my fur." Serawyn shook her head, "Anyway, did you hear we're using the new
grand piano for practice today? I'm so excited!"
"Oh
my gosh, 'Wyn, calm down." Lyra inspected her nails and then turned to Lilith,
"You know, I hate playing piano; it's so annoying."
"Uh,
yea!" Lilith giggled confusedly. Lyra was usually "obsessed with piano."
Serawyn
rounded another corner and pushed open the door to the Palace Music Academy.
"You're
LATE!!!!!!" Izzy, their elderly, very fierce, very fluffy teacher, shouted.
"Sorry!"
Serawyn stared at her toes.
"Serawyn,
you play piano, Lilith, ukulele…" Izzy eyed Lyra, "…and Lyra, ukulele."
"But
I play piano." Lyra sighed expressively.
"Not
today." Izzy glowered.
Serawyn
marched up to the new piano and began playing her warm-up exercises, while Izzy
yelled at a group of beginners trying to play guitar.
"Hey
'Wyn, can you help me tune my harp?" Serawyn turned to see Titus, a newcomer to
the rabbitry. Izzy had made her show him around at his first practice, and consequently
they were becoming good friends.
"How
many times do I have to do this for you?" She rolled her eyes.
"IZZY!!!
I need Serawyn's help!!" Lyra suddenly wailed from the ukulele group.
"Me
too!" Lilith yelled.
"SIT
DOWN AND FOCUS!" Izzy roared.
"Man,
she's quite the old battle-axe." Titus motioned toward Izzy. Serawyn rolled her
eyes again, helped him with his harp, and returned to her warm-ups. Lilith and
Lyra, however, continued a loud conversation.
"I
can't believe it; I would never play that ugly piano," Lyra said.
"Yea,
I'm learning to play the harp." Lilith declared, with a rather pointed
look toward Titus.
Later
that day…
"Alright,
Serawyn, good job with that song." Izzy plopped down, "What's the matter?"
"Well,
I think Lyra and Lilith are mad at me or something."
"It's
called passive aggression, honey. They're probably jealous." She harumphed.
"Jealous?"
Serawyn sniffed.
"Classic
teenager drama. They want your position, so they're putting you down. Talk to
your mom about it and keep being loving and kind." Izzy marched off to scold
the violinists next.
Serawyn
stared dumbly at the piano keys. Why would they be jealous of her? Sure,
sometimes she got the coveted spot at the piano, but they got their chances
too. Besides, they were friends. Weren't they supposed to be happy for each
other? "Izzy's right," she said to herself. "I need to keep showing them the
love of Jesus. Even though this hurts, I can't get sucked into the drama. I
have to forgive and forget."
"Serawyn,
you really should learn ukulele; it's so in." Lyra hopped up.
"I
like playing piano. But why don't you get yours, and we can play together?"
Serawyn forced a grin.
"Uh,
sure." For once at a loss for more words, Lyra left.
"Thank
you, Jesus." A genuine smile spread over Serawyn's face, and she started again on
her song.
